I just saw District 9 and thought it was pretty well done. Mike tossed up a good review of the movie here.
I was interested in other stuff the director has done and came across this link which collects ten of his short works (ads, shorts, etc.). They are worth watching. Except the last one. Skip that.
I knew about the Citroen commercial, Alive with Technology, long before the Transformers movie came out. I still that that one commercial is cooler than the Transformers movies. Check out the link: http://www.filmjunk.com/2009/05/04/the-short-works-of-neill-blomkamp/

Putting Encyclopedia Brown in his place
I used the read these stories as a kid, I remember liking most of them. But even then, I just had the think... "WTF? Who would know that one esoteric bit of trivia." Apparently the author did, and he liked to hold it over me to make me feel dumb.
I found this post that takes apart Encyclopedia Brown and points out 10 ridiculous mysteries he solved. Check it out here.
A few quotes:

A few quotes:
And even the few children who can tell the Civil War from the American Revolution certainly don't display an Apu-like knowledge of its major motives, battles, and dates.[...]
Would you really try to challenge a group of isolated strangers who have just proven that they can slaughter and cook a goose, and then lie to innocent children about it? Is that not the worst real-life Deliverance red-flag imaginable?[...]
To solve this one, a child would have to either be a bird-watcher (unlikely) or inclined to wake up before sunrise (impossible).[...]

I'm going to make this song pertinent to my life.
I listened to this song 56 times yesterday. I have itunes verification. When I frst decided to listen to it again, I had a few reactions:
1) Anger: Why the fuck haven't I listened to this song before now?
2) More Anger: I wish I had been in a relationship in 1995 so I could relate this song to a break-up or some other strong emotional moment.
So, to remedy this I'm going to play this song until something incredible happens.

Crazy things living in Raleigh Sewers
Too bad they arn't teenage mutant ninja turtles.
It actually reminded me of the pods from Aliens. Maybe facehuggers will burst out of these. One can only hope for something so awesome.
Wired reports what these really are. I prefer to think these are crazy aliens. Or autonomous brains. Like Krang.

Danger Mouse new album, a blank CD-R
This is either genius, or laziness.
I'd go with genius here.
Danger Mouse and Sparklehorse's Mark Linkous actually made an album, Dark Night of the Soul, and it's good. The entire thing is available streaming from NPR. Or you can get it from any number of torrent sites or music sharing forums. Either way, if you bought the blank CD-R, you paid for the license to the music. You are legally allowed to obtain the music by any means you want.
The Flaming Lips (or at least Wayne Cohen) show up on the album, as well as Frank Black (from the Pixies), Iggy Pop, Suzanne Vega and a bunch of others.
And you get a killer booklet (100+ pages) of photos by David Lynch if you buy the CD-R.

Just Released
Booby Hatch -
Sparks explode when two frustrated workers at the world's biggest erotic toy manufacturer finally meet, solving both of their problems in ways they never anticipated. Cherry (Sharon Joy Miller), a product tester, has a busy sex life but can't find a boyfriend. Elsewhere in the factory, the company's top male tester, Marcello (Rudy Ricci), is having job-threatening performance issues -- but not for long.

Knight Rider, the original
I'm so glad Hulu is showing the original Knight Rider episodes. All of season one is available now. The re-hash of knight rider was crap. I have only seen one episode, but well, it was full of PC stereotypes and bad plot twists.
Quantum Leap is available too!
I'd actually love to see the stats comparing the viewership of the old TV shows to the new ones.
edit: And what is Team Knight Rider anyway?

Euro Trash
This video is a train wreck. It's so delightfully euro trash.
I can't think of anything more self-indulgently European. Shit, it's not even European, it's a French thing that is "taking over Europe". There is even a news article about this.
I love this shit.

Day Break
I'm watching Day Break again. It's an awesome series that was canceled after only one season. It's like a fucked up Groundhog Day. Detective Bret Hopper is reliving the same day over and over again. He wakes up and finds out that he is framed for killing an Assistant District Attorney, Garza, gets to watch his girlfriend die, his sister threatened, is drugged, gets the crap kicked out of him and get to wake up to do it all over again.
What is interesting is that his injuries persist. If he gets kicked in the ribs, the bruise carries over. If he gets shot, the wound stays.
Each day he learns what his actions lead to. He gets a few more clues to solve the puzzle. It's really interesting and quite well done. There are some really great scenes when he finds himself in the same situation over again. He knows exactly how people will act and uses that against them. Sometimes it doesn't work out perfectly, so he tries again the next day until he get's it right. (I'll put this in a way for Mike to understand: It's like playing the same level of a video game over and over.)
I cant embed any clips for some reason, but you can go here for some video: http://www.tv.com/day-break/show/58017/videos.html

Rowsdower!
This clip popped up in the "Recommended for You" field of YouTube and it reminded me of how good this episode of MST3K was. It's called Final Sacrifice and I think it's about a Canadian vampire cult...or something close. However, besides MANTIS, I'm throwing a hat in the ring for FInal Sacrifice for the next marathon:

One new voicemail message. Check voicemail?
First unheard message:
William, it's your friend Jay Kamath. I'm in LA with Mike Soucy. Remember, we all grew up together. There is this nice lawn here and we're all rolling in it...Recieved 5AM east coast time. To replay this message, Press 1. No more messages.
Mike wants to put his dick on the lawn. I don't know what that means. But there is this really nice lawn out here. (Pause.) And Mike really wants to put his dick on something...
Anyway there are a lot of lawns. Lots of green spaces. (Pause. Mike says something in the background.) Mike is leaning toward Alistair to put his dick on. That is a direct quote. Now Mike is going to hump a car...
Anways there are lots of nice lawns around. We can all roll around. It's good. Everyone will have a good, great time. So stop being a bitch and come out here. Fuck you!
